Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a means of pelvic floor rehabilitation that improves the pelvic floor muscles by artificially stimulating them to contract continuously over approximately thirty minutes. Biofeedback is a non-painful, in-office procedure that for best results, is performed over the course of 6-8 sessions. It is typically used for patients with overactive bladder (OAB), urinary incontinence, and pelvic pain.

Receiving biofeedback treatments in office also teaches patients how to correctly perform kegel exercises. Most women who practice doing kegel exercises while at home unknowingly contract muscles in their abdomen instead of their pelvis. With the use of electrodes attached to the abdomen, it is possible to get instant feedback on exactly which muscles are being contracted when practicing the exercise. With this immediate feedback, it is easier for the patient to revise the movements in order to target and isolate the intended muscles. Once this knowledge is obtained in office, the patient can continue to practice the exercises at home maximize optimal improvement.
