What is duplicated uterus?
Duplicated uterus, also known as uterus didelphys is a congenital anomality that occurs at the time of reproductive development that results in two uteruses. Each ovary is attached to its own uterus and functions as a typical uterus.
How do I know if I have a duplicated uterus?
Most women are not aware they have a duplicated uterus until they are trying to conceive. Duplicated uterus can cause complications when trying to conceive, as each uterus is typically notably smaller than a typical, single uterus. Duplicated uterus can be found via pelvic ultrasonography, which is performed on a weekly basis in office. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, Dr. Shakiba works collaboratively with an infertility specialist to decide whether surgery is needed in order to ensure a safe, minimally complicated pregnancy.
