Urinary Incontinence

What is urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence refers to the involuntary leakage of urine. Some women suffer slight incontinence involving minor leaks while sneezing, coughing, lifting, or laughing, while others may experience severe incontinence involving complete involuntary emptying of their bladder. Urinary incontinence can be a serious burden to one’s work and social life.

How can urinary incontinence be treated?

Fortunately, there are a variety of approaches that can be taken to help improve and even completely alleviate this condition. As a first step, there are a variety of anticholinergic medications that can be used, as well as in-office procedures such as *PTNS* and *biofeedback*. The strength and function of the bladder itself can also be tested using a *urodynamic* study which is also performed in office. Results are typically reviewed with each patient immediately following the study, allowing Dr. Shakiba and the patient to collaborate on the best possible plan of care. If needed, surgery with of transobturator sling placement, may be the most definitive option to help treat the incontinence and allow the patient to have her confidence and freedom back.
